A SET OF GOLD LACQUER BOXES
Meiji era (1868-1912)
Comprising a rectangular two-tiered box, interior tray, and lid, the upper tier containing two smaller rectangular boxes and lids and pierced with a circular opening to allow one of the boxes to be released, the lids all of inrobuta (flush-fitting) type, the exteriors decorated with flowering cherry trees, rustic huts, mountains, and streams; the wood substrates covered in gold lacquer, the decoration chiefly in gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with lavish enhancements of gold and silver metal, the other surfaces all dense gold nashiji
