Description
An extremely Rare Alexander Gardner original Glass negative plate circa 1867. Original glass gold tone plate of a native American in full dress and head dress. The image is believed to have been taken in 1863 by Gardner when several tribal leaders traveled to meet with the President of the United States on February 23. The portrait photograph was taken in a studio that is seen in other Gardner photographs of the time and same trip, judging by the background floor and wall boards. This orotone or gold tone glass plate is mounted in a later frame to protect the edges from damage and secured. Edward Curtis is the most famous photographer to use this method along with Gardner. This piece was in a family’s private collection for generations. Original glass negatives do not come to market often. The image appears to be on a front piece of glass with a second piece behind it to protect the image. Signatures cannot be seen based on initial inspection. The glass image measures 14 inches by 11 inches.
