Description
Fine photograph, 14 x 11 in. b/w, showing five women of the Piegan tribe, the largest of the three that made up the Blackfoot Confederacy. The women sit on the floor of their tepee in traditional garb while waiting for the Choosing Dance to begin. The ‘choosing dance’, also known as the ‘owl dance’, was meant for courting and socializing. On the verso is a handwritten note dating this photo to 1907 in Montana and stating the photographer was Norman A. Forsyth. Some creasing throughout, else very good. Forsyth worked for Underwood and Underwood as well as Keystone View Company while living in Montana. During this time, he was known to also document the daily lives of Native American communities in the same area as the Piegan.
