Photos Marked: "1911," "Butterfly Dance 1912," Snake Dance 1913," "Snake Dance 1912," "Snake Dance 1913," And "Butterfly Ceremonie." Descriptions Include: "228 Photo by Harmon Percy Marble, Southwest Photo, SW33 Dancer, most likely Hopi Note people sitting on the rooftops. Mainly Indian Spectators. This would tell us this is a sacred dance and Anglos would not be welcome," "Date: ca. 1912-13, Location: Hopi Indian Reservation, Village of Old Oraibi... Description: The Snake Dance Ceremony is performed in alternate years in Hopi Villages in August.For the Hopi, This is a sacred Ritual that is part of their annual religious cycle. Because of its exotic nature, however, in which male dancers dance with rattlesnakes in their mouths, its observance has long attracted curious non-Indians and tourists... Note many non-Indians in the crowd, especially women with umbrellas... Russell Hartman Comments: marble dated one photo of the Snake Dance as 1912 and another as 1913..."And "Photo 11051...Description: Hopi Butterfly Dance, showing two lines of male and female dancers, moving in opposite directions...
