Description
Benjamin Disraeli ALS Re: A "Mad Letter" & Calling Parliament Together.
4pp of a bifolium, measuring 4.625" x 7.375", Hughenden, England, dated December 22 [1866]. Written on black bordered mourning stationery, and addressed to his assistant private secretary, Charles Fremantle. Signed twice, "D", first in the middle of page 3, and then at the conclusion of page 4. Reads in part: "Notwithstanding Blomer, I send you another mad letter. It seems very hard, that a man should be locked up because he thinks he has 'first rate abilities'. If this were acted on generally, what lacunae in social life, to say nothing of the H. of C. All the men who have not office. I shall be in town on Thursday afternoon…I shall of course be happy to see you, but I beg you will not let this interfere with any holiday arrangements you may have made." Disraeli concludes his letter with initial details of a proposed meeting of Parliament. With flattened mail folds. Minor toning and soiling throughout.
