Description
Tintype of Union Soldier Holding Rifle
Tintype of a Union soldier in uniform, standing full length and holding a rifle, posing before a studio backdrop, 2.5" x 3.75", no place, circa 1861-65. A few touches of coloring. Expected surface imperfections include crackling and denting. Overall, good condition.
The tintype was invented in the 1850s and was most popular during the Civil War due to its low cost and durability. During the photographic process, an emulsion was applied directly to a thin sheet of iron (not tin!) coated with a dark lacquer or enamel, which produced a unique positive image.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
