Description

Two 1867 Maps of "The Lost Cause", Highlighting Military Operations of the Civil War

A pair of hand-colored maps of "The Lost Cause: Map of the Military Operations During the War of 1861-1865." Measuring between 25" x 18" and "26" x 19", New York, Entered into Congress in 1867 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. Produced by E.B. Treat & Company, Publishers. These maps were "Designed Expressly to Accompany 'The Lost Cause', a Standard Southern History of the War" and include a chronology of the principal events of the war, each marked with a red dot. One of the maps has been linen-backed, with light toning and soiling. This map has uneven edges and minor paper loss and separations. The other map has edge toning, with soiling and staining throughout, particularly at the left edge. Tape at the folds with a repair made at the left edge where paper was lost. Both are stored folded, overall very good.

This map was specifically commissioned to accompany Edward A. Pollard's book "The Lost Cause", which supported the southern sympathy movement that was on the rise after the Civil War. The Lost Cause movement was an apologist ideology adopted by angry southern whites who resented the Confederate defeat and the Reconstruction that followed.
