Description

G. McClellan Orders Ammunition After Battle of Antietam

1. Manuscript Document issued by Major General George McClellan (1826-1885), 1p, 7.875" x 12.375", Sharpsburg, September 22, 1862. Docketing to verso. Folds; minor toning; light edgewear; else fine condition.

Just days after the Battle of Antietam, America's bloodiest day in history, McClellan sought to bring his army back up to fighting condition. The circular issued from "Head-Quarters Army of Potomac / Camp near Sharpsburg" reads, in full, "Division Ordnance officers will as soon as possible report themselves at these Head-Quarters with a list of the kind, quantity & calibre of small arm ammunitions yet required to bring up the supply of their Divisions to standard fixed by former circular."

2. Printed Document, General Orders No. 9, signed in print by the Governor and Commander-in-Chief, J. Gregory Smith (1818-1891), 1p on a bifold sheet of State of Vermont stationery, 7.875" x 9.75", Woodstock, July 25, 1864. Endorsed verso of the second page has dampstaining and ink splatter. Folds; foxing; light staining; else near fine condition.

Ordered that Peter T. Washburn (1814-1870), Adjutant and Inspector General, will have charge of recruiting in Vermont under the Act of Congress approved July 4, 1864, "to send recruiting agents into any of the States declared to be in rebellion except the States of Arkansas, Tennessee and Louisiana, to recruit volunteers..." The order also provides that for any town that desires to avail themselves of the benefits of said act, they may deposit with the State Treasurer the sum of $300 for each recruit desired by such town, not to exceed 40% of the quota for such town, and the money, "shall be used for the payment of such bounties, and other necessary expenses incident thereto as may be necessary to raise such men. The recruits so obtained shall be mustered into the United States service to the general credit of the State of Vermont..." and then assigned to the credit of the towns that made the deposits.
