Continental Army 1777 Receipt for Guns & Bayonet
Autograph Document Signed, "Jerh. Halsey Capt.", 1p, 7.125" x 2.25", Preston, January 19, 1777. Docketed at verso. One center vertical fold; minor toning; else fine condition.
Halsey writes, in full, "Rec'd of Doctr Joshua Downer one of the Select Men of Preston Two Guns one Bayonet & one Cartridge Box to furnish My Company." In another hand, below, "Only for one Gunn Compleat the other Returnd & Remains in town stock".
Jeremiah Halsey (1743-1829) was born in Stonington, Connecticut. He was admitted to the bar in June of 1770 and practiced law in Preston, Connecticut. He was commissioned in the Continental Army on May 1, 1775. At Ticonderoga, he was commissioned as Captain of the armed sloop "Enterprise" and commanded the fleet of vessels at Lake Ticonderoga. He served as an engineer at the capture of St. Johns and was made captain in the Continental Line in December of 1776. He served as Lieutenant Colonel in the 27th Regular Militia from Preston, Connecticut, in January 1780.
Joshua Downer (1735-1795) was born in Norwich, Connecticut. As a physician and a private in the campaign of 1755, he cared for the wounded after the battle of Fort Griswold.
