Bernard Law Montgomery (1887-1976) British General. Montgomery was one of the most renowned Allied generals. He gained great popularity after he forced Rommel to retreat from Egypt after the Battle of El-Alamein. then pursued the German armies across North Africa to their final surrender in Tunisia in May 1943. Thereafter he led the Allied ground operations in Normandy. 4 ¾” x 7 ½”, war-date letter signed, “B. L. Montgomery General Eighth Army,” “Eighth Army Sicily, “ August 30 (no year), to Mrs. Ivy Gibbs. “…Tell your son that his father is doing a fine job of work and helping to bring nearer the day of final victory….” Mounted, together with the front panel of the mailing envelope to a piece of 10” x 8” cardboard.
