Description
John C. Breckinridge (1821-1875) Politician, soldier. Breckinridge represented Kentucky in both houses of Congress and became the 14th and youngest-ever vice president of the United States. Serving from 1857 to 1861with James Buchanan, he took office at the age of 36. He served in the U.S. Senate during the outbreak of the Civil War. He was expelled after joining the Confederate Army, where he served as a Major General. He was appointed Confederate Secretary of War in 1865. 5” x 8 ¼” autograph letter signed, two-pages (front and back), Lexington, Kentucky, May 9, 1859, to Col. William Hickey. “…the enclosed (2) letters from Mr Charles De Selding…will explain themselves…place these letters in the hands of some intelligent, reliable and investigating lawyer, with thw request to look into the matter….” Hickey’s response is transcribed on the reverse side. There is paper-loss in the lower margin, not affecting Breckinridge’s letter.
