Description
Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) Politician, President of the Confederate States of America. Davis served as the only President of the Confederate States of America from 1861 to 1865. As a member of the Democratic Party, he represented Mississippi in the United States Senate and the House of Representatives prior to switching allegiance to the Confederacy. He was appointed as the United States Secretary of War, serving from 1853 to 1857, under President Franklin Pierce. 4 ½” x 7” autograph letter signed, Washington, July 6, 1860, to “Col. W. Hickey.” “…look at the marked pages in the Herald which I sent to you and inform me when I introduced the bill which aterward became the amendment referred to. When it was reported back to the Senate, and at what stage of the session it was put as an amendment on the legislative bill… Hickey’s response is written, presumed by Hickey, is written in red ink on the back of the letter. There is some clipping in the top margin and minor paper-loss in the folds.
