1876-Dated Centennial Period, Color Lithograph Folding Map titled, "Historical Map of the United States Showing Early Spanish, French & English Discoveries and Explorations, also Forts, Towns & Battlefields of Historic Interest" by Rufus Blanchard, in its original large folio book format, Very Fine.
This huge Color Lithograph Folding Map opens to about 54" x 58", printed in color with some Additional Hand-coloring. This Map is laid onto linen and folded, housed within its original folio gold gilt-lettered embossed title on the maroon color calf boards. The back of the map has ten printed panels that chronicle American history with interesting factoids dating from 860 A.D. to the Centennial of 1876. Some historical theme examples include: 1770 - Tea destroyed in Boston harbor; 1789 - Public Debt $94,000,000; 1833 - Mormon troubles in Missouri; 1864 - Union General Sherman captures Atlanta; 1875 - Public Debt of $2,128,688,726; and many more historical points. This Map includes several Insets with vignettes plus important engravings of Robert Fulton's Steam Boat, the "Clermont"; John Fitch's first Steam Boat, the "Perseverance"; and Fitch's second Steam Boat. The folio covers are rubbed and worn at the edges, and the map has some splits and small losses at the fold intersections. A most interesting historical American Map that is highly educational.
