South Carolina Currency
July 6, 1789 "Tobacco Plant" and "Hemp Rope" Vignetted 1789 South Carolina "City of Charleston" Note PMG EF-40
South Carolina. City of Charleston. July 6, 1789. One Shilling Three Pence with "Tobacco Plant" and "Hemp Rope" vignettes. Engraved by Abernethie. PMG graded Extremely Fine-40.
Fr. SC-197. An most interesting design City of Charleston, South Carolina issued note, its sharply detailed "Tobacco Plant" and "Hemp Rope" vignettes being located at lower left. Engraved by Abernethie with his name seen in the text block design next to the Hemp Rope. Only 12,000 of these City notes were authorized to be printed. It is uniquely styled, having a rectangular shape. Both signatures of C. Warham and S. Beach clearly present as the two required "Commissioners," yet called a remainder for lack of a serial number. This note has four full to wide margins which create nice highlighting of its deep black printed text and designs. The holder states corner repair which is virtually invisible on the perfectly clean blank reverse. These great looking City of Charleston are great bargains considering their wonderful engraved vignettes by Abernethie.
