Description
Virginia Currency
May 6, 1776 Virginia Four Pounds Note PMG Choice F-15 Denomination Rarity with All Dashes for Value in Newman
Current Money of Virginia. May 6, 1776 Ordinance Issue. Four Pounds / Eighty Shillings. PMG graded Choice Fine-15.
Fr. VA-101. Remarkably, this is the very first 4 Pounds note we've ever had to offer on this May 6, 1776 Virginia Ordinance currency issue. It appears to have the eye appeal and centering of a Very Fine grade. It is fully Signed by, Morris and Seaton, and is well printed on standard thick rag paper, uniface with nice designs. Arms of Virginia, engraved by Robert Scott, are displayed at upper left with decorative outer border cuts. A key note rarity from this 1776 Revolutionary War date with Only 1,000 notes printed, all to be redeemed by January 1st, 1784 back into the Treasury and destroyed. This Four Pounds is the highest denomination note on the issue. PMG states having a tape repair (this at top center centerfold edge and appears to be a tiny near invisible piece of an old stamp hinge from prior mounting... not tape), plus some worn corners and a trivial pinhole at top edge. The only other 4 example we could trace was Ex: Ford Collection sale being graded Very Fine with problems, that realized $1,380 in the 2007 Ford XVII sale. This is an exceedingly rare denomination lacking in virtually all Colonial and Virginia currency collections, and thus is an important opportunity.
