Jonathan Bastian (American, 20th century). "Fabulous Beasts" acrylic on board, 1990. Signed and dated on lower right. A fascinating painting by outsider artist Jonathan Bastian depicting two magnificent hybrid beasts before a rolling hill that is lined with repeated white crosses beneath a starry night sky. The beast on the left is a merman type with a scaly body, a curled tail, and upraised arms flanking his crowned lively visage presenting wide-open eyes, flaring nostrils, rosy cheeks, and a fang-filled mouth. On the right is a mesmerizing four-legged creature with a spotted coat, cloven hooves, a long curved neck, and a heart-shaped head presenting a whiskered visage topped by pointy horns. This magical painting, replete with vibrant color and a charming naïve style is set in a frame that Bastian sponge painted with lively motifs. Jonathan Bastian has been creating paintings and wood carvings for three decades. Originally from the Palatinate area of Germany, his ancestors emigrated to the US, landing in New York prior to settling in the Kutztown and Trexlertown area of Pennsylvania. Bastian's influences included his father who was a woodworker and his grandmother, Mary Kohler Christman, a folk artist who created paintings.
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

Condition
Signed and dated by the artist on the lower right. Slight scuffs/nicks to the frame and very minor surface wear to periphery of painting. Otherwise, painting and painted frame are in overall very good condition. Fitted with suspension wire and ready to display.
