Description
Jonathan Bastian (American, 20th century). Oil on board and painted frame, 1989. Signed and dated at lower right. Signed on verso of frame as well. A delightful painting of a grand turkey towering over a petite pilgrim, who is dapperly dressed in his black suit and hat, walking with a cane toward the turkey, and gazing up at the big bird presumbably with admiration. Bastian mesmerizes the viewer with patterns galore -blue and green dots over the turkey's brown body and golden feet; blue and green "eye" motifs surrounded by sienna squiggles against a black ground of the fanned plumage; an azure sky embellished with red, white, and blue streaks and royal blue dots interrupted by a white crescent moon at the lower right; and finally, dark blue-green blades of grass sprouting from the green field. In addition, Bastian painted the frame with red sponge-painted motifs punctuated by green dots. A wonderful folk art painting in the spirit of America's Thanksgiving! Size (painting): 15.25" L x 10.375" W (38.7 cm x 26.4 cm) Size (frame): 17.8" L x 12.875" W (45.2 cm x 32.7 cm)
