Pre-Columbian, north coast Peru, probably San Jose de Moro, Moche culture, Phase V, Moro type, ca. 6th to 7th century CE. A stunning fineline painted Moro type of pottery stirrup vessel with a flask or "doughnut" shaped bottle of a unique design. The body rests on a flared foot, and an unusual tubular cut out is set laterally though the body with a relief frog poking out of the opening on both sides. A "false" spout finial is sealed and capped by a crouching frog - the actual spout opening and handle are situated at an angle to the side. The creamy surface is painted with sienna red marine motifs that include monstrous fish, and water plants. A spectacular ceremonial vessel! Size: 8" L x 3.5" W x 8" H (20.3 cm x 8.9 cm x 20.3 cm)
