Description
Vintage President "George Washington" silhouette cut from the statue by Houdon, by H. & N. Laughan, vintage, probably 1960s, lithographic print in vintage glass frame and picture mat.
The picture incl. mat is 10" x 14.1/2" [25.4cm x 36.8cm]; the wooden frame 11" x 15.1/2" [27.9cm x 39.4cm]; the frame shows surface wear and small damages [vintage condition]; overall very good condition. See photos.
The original sculpture by Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828) is considered one of the most accurate depictions of George Washington. It is located in the rotunda of the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, Virginia.
Silhouette, an image or design in a single hue and tone, most usually the popular 18th- and 19th-century cut or painted profile portraits done in black on white or the reverse. The name Silhouette traces back to the mid-18th century French finance minister, Etienne de Silhouette. Because his name was synonymous with doing things cheaply and because he was fond of making these images himself, this artform was named after him. In America, Silhouettes were highly popular from about 1790 to 1840.
Upon buyer's request, the picture can be send without glass frame which would reduce the shipping costs.
