Description
Dated 1918 cartoon captioned "Goodbye San Francisco, Hello! New York" by San Francisco painter and illustrator Delle Ernest Randall (Born 1877.) The ink and watercolor drawing shows a man in suit and fedora with satchel in hand, clearly just arrived from San Francisco and dwarfed by the skyscrapers of New York City. The drawing includes 36 signatures, presumably all gathering to say farewell to the person identified only as "J. E. M." The signers include members of the publishing and arts community of San Francisco, including illustrator and cartoonist Fred L. Packer, journalist and art patron Alma Marie Sullivan Reed (1889-1966,) writer/ dramatist Frank Wiltermood (1867–1935,) writer Eugene B. Block, newspaper publisher F. W. Kellogg, and newspaper editor Charles E. Lovelace. Signed and dated 7/20/18 lower left of drawing. Frame, approx. 23 1/2" x 18 1/2". Sight, approx. 19 1/4" x 14 1/4". Provenance: The collection of Mark Smith of Amherst, Virginia.
