Description
BEERBOHM, MAX Autograph letter signed ("Max"), incorporating a drawing, dated July 15, 1909.
On a folded sheet of notepaper, page size 7 x 4 1/2 inches (17.5 x 11.25 cm), with Beerbohm's 49, Upper Berkeley Street, W. address printed at the head, 4 pp., the last page with a fine ink drawing of "Taft's favourite playwright." Some soiling, usual folds, some separation starting at folds, a few traces of old adhesive from a mount on the verso of one page.
A brief social letter addressed to "My Dear Clyde." "I rejoiced at sight of your handwriting though I was presently plunged into gloom by your invitation for luncheon tomorrow (Friday); this day being one on which I am engaged beyond recall. And on Saturday I have to go away till Monday. So how about lunching with me on Monday...? We are unclear who "Taft's favorite playwright" was (the portrait in fact appears to be one of Taft himself), but the caricature is witty in its economy of line.
