Item Details
Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), ca. 1000 to 1250 CE. This is a fine and large hand built grayware olla vessel with a corrugated pattern neck. This olla has a rounded base, meaning it was probably made to be placed into a sandy or earthen floor to stand upright, perhaps used for storage or cooking. The bulbous body swells out and up to a broad neck decorated with corrugated coils that are slightly flattened across the exterior surface from shoulder to rim. The rest of the vessel was also made using the coil method but scraped and completely smooth without corrugation. This is a rare type that we rarely see, and at this size- this is a very scarce example! Size: 15" Diameter x 17" H (38.1 cm x 43.2 cm)

For a similar example of corrugated pottery and more information on the technique, please see the American Southwest Virtual Museum's website and the Coconino gray wide mouth jar from the Museum of Northern Arizona collection, catalog number: A738.

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated.

Provenance: private Vero Beach, Florida, USA collection, acquired from Morning Star Gallery (for the lofty sum of $12,000), Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA in 2000
