Description
(1906 – 1979) U.S. Army photographer during World War II. Fine collection of photography done by Speiser during World War II, as well as many of his personal effects, including: thirty 2.25 x 3.5 in. b/w photos depicting a war-torn Germany as well as the Allies moving into a liberated Buchenwald; WITH twenty-five photos, approx. 4 x 3 in. b/w, all focusing on the destruction to the German infrastructure, along with a photo of Speiser standing in front of an Army jeep; WITH a fine 3.5 x 5.5 in. b/w portrait of Speiser in uniform; WITH nine 8 x 5 in. b/w photos, some of which are blow-ups of the smaller pictures already mentioned, featuring once picturesque cities and buildings like the mansion Schloss Benrath and the city of Remscheid; WITH a portrait, 6.5 x 9 in. b/w taken by Speiser of an unidentified American soldier, inscribed to Speiser on the verso. This lot also includes personal effects of Speiser, including: four shoulder rank insignia, lapel devices for his army uniform, the ribbon bar for his uniform, plus Army of Occupation medal, World War II Victory medal, and his American Defense medal, all in boxes. The last two pieces of this lot include Speiser’s death certificate and a Presidential document honoring Speiser for his service in the armed forces, bearing the printed signature of President Jimmy Carter. All pieces in very good to fine condition.
