Description
MAXIMILIAN VON WEICHS (1881 - 1954) German field marshal and a recipient of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. Participated in the invasion of Poland, in the Balkans, and in Russia. Crushed at Stalingrad, he was placed in the defense of the Balkans. Later tried for war crimes. Original photograph, 2 3/8 x 3 1/4 in. b/w, showing an American officer looking on as five other men on a sidewalk display von Weichs' formal marshal's baton, interim baton, and standard, no doubt taken from the general's home only moment's earlier. A pencil note on verso reads: 'Some of our men playing with Feldmarshall von Weichs insignia'. Sold with six reprints of negatives from this and other images taken at the same time, and a 3 x 5 in. modern reprint of another photo showing men with the same objects, misidentified as belonging to von Leeb. Very good. The formal baton is now on display at National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center, Columbus, Georgia.
