Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Honduras, Ulua Valley, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery bowl in the shape of an abstract avian creature standing upon a pair of cylindrical legs and a downturned tail on the verso. Bearing orange, red, black, and tan hues, the bird presents with concentric circular eyes, a tab-shaped beak, folded wings bearing columns of brightly-colored feathers, crosshatching and stippled patterns across the breast and body, and inversely corresponding cresting waves surrounding the upper rim. The interior walls exhibits a pair of parallel black rings above a red band, and the center of the basin is unadorned. Size: 6.1" W x 3.8" H (15.5 cm x 9.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

Condition
Repaired with possible restoration, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and chipping to interior and exterior surfaces, with light fading to pigment, and minor encrustations. Great preservation to painted motifs and avian form.
