Here is a rare opportunity to own a very elegant and interesting diving helmet just recently discovered. This helmet appears to be made by Charles Petit in France during the late 19th century. It is a 4 light (window) model with latched locking device securing the bonnet and breastplate together. This style of helmet was utilized in France and throughout Europe during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

It is estimated that this helmet was produced at the very end of the 19th Century or early 20th Century in Paris. The helmet features a castellation seam running vertically in-between the faceplate & top window. The very top peak of the bonnet has a separate round castellation seam. This construction method was standard during the 19th Century and into the early 20th Century. With the seam exposed, it demonstrates in a fascinating visual way how the helmet was assembled.

This helmet features an exhaust valve, acoustic telephone connection fitting, air fitting, neck ring locking hardware, faceplate gasket, all the glass, internal air vents, and exhaust button. The old neck ring gasket and faceplate knobs are no longer with the helmet. French divers favored the acoustic telephone system, hence the fitting located at the upper back of the bonnet.

The helmet features a wonderful consistent patina to the copper body and brass hardware. The bonnet does have some working dents, but none are severe. All of the glass is in good condition with no cracks or breaks. The locking hardware works correctly.

On the side of the breastplate neck ring is a serial number stamped into it, 1037. The size, font, and number is consistent with ones applied by the Siebe Gorman Company. On the locking hardware both front and back is the number 37 stamped into the brass. The faceplate features an R, which possibly an inspection stamp. Upon very close inspection of the front of the breastplate there appears to be the faint outline of where an oval tag was originally. Petit did use an oval tag as well as Siebe Gorman, who also produced this style in limited quantities. It is quite possible that the breastplate was produced by Siebe Gorman.

All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.
