Offered is a very seldom seen Diving Equipment & Supply Company (DESCO) commercial model diving helmet. Specifically referred to as the model 29134, this is a 4 light 12 bolt (4 windows and twelve studs on the breastplate) helmet. It is similar in construction to the famed US Navy Mark V helmet that DESCO also produces. The primary difference between the two models is the larger threaded faceplate, larger horizontal style side and top windows, and an overall lighter weight.

This specific helmet was made on June 20th, 1956. It is serial number 411, which is present on the ID plate and inside of both bonnet and breastplate neck rings. These matching numbers offer proof the top and bottom started off together from the DESCO Milwaukee, WI facility. For unknown reasons DESCO would stamp the serial number and model number on the wrong sections of the ID plate. We have noted this detail on other helmets from the same time period.

This helmet features an adjustable exhaust valve, telephone cup, breastplate eyelets, spring safety lock, telephone gooseneck, breastplate flanges, wing nuts, all the original glass, window guards, internal air vents and a 1950s era communication telephone inside the bonnet. The neck ring gasket has been removed. The communications fitting does have a factory cap on it.

Overall the helmet is in beautiful condition. The copper body and brass hardware appear to have been polished years ago. This has resulted subtle patina combined with slight luster. A clear coat may have been applied to retain the polish, which can be removed easily with polishing if so desired. The top of the bonnet exhibits a few working dents from use, which is to be expected. There is also a dent in the copper near the spring-loaded safety pin.

It is important to keep in mind that commercial diving helmets like this one were special ordered by a company or individual diver. Unlike a military model that may have been made in large quantities, a commercial model like this one was made one at a time when an order was placed. Therefore, finding commercial diving helmets, especially from the 1950s, is exceedingly difficult.
