Description
The Complete Manual of Free Diving, by Philippe Tailliez, Frederic Dumas, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Jean Alinat, F. Devilla, P. Cabarrou and R. Perrimond–Trouchet, 1957, Putnam. New York. Jacques Yves Cousteau’s first American publication was The Silent World, which was published in 1953. The book became a major influence in the new sport of scuba diving, which had been launched by the creation of the Cousteau and Gagnan Aqualung. Cousteau had been a member of the French Navy GERS unit, which was the first to use the Aqualung in a military capacity. That unit had authored the first book on using the Aqualung, La Plongée en Scaphandre, in 1949. An updated edition was published in 1955 titled La Plongee. This is the English language version of that book published two years later. Covers SCUBA, Rebreathers and surface supplied diving. This book remains an important first-hand guide to the practice of recreational scuba diving before any major national dive training agencies were formed in America. First edition book is in good condition, B & W photos, complete with the often-missing decompression calculator in back sleeve, with laser copy dust jacket in protective sleeve.
