Description
Beneath Tropic Seas. A Record of Diving among the Coral Reefs of Haiti, by William Beebe. Very early book on marine life on coral reefs by the famed Director of the Department of Zoology of the New York Zoological Society. Excellent accounting by the distinguished scientist/diver of early diving using Miller Dunn 2 helmets, and early underwater film and photography in the Caribbean. There are several different editions of this book with different dust jackets. This edition is a 1937 Halcyon House printing of the original 1928 and the jacket features a painting of Beebe in his helmet and underwater camera, amongst a blizzard of colorful tropical fish. This Halcyon edition has 59 illustrations, many more than some other printings, and states that unless otherwise noted, that all photographs were taken by Floyd Crosby. Floyd’s son David was later to gain fame as a member of the musical group Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. This 85-year-old book is a large and heavy book in good condition, but over its life its weight has caused a split between both front and back covers as shown. The split is the whole length of the page but the spine is not detached in any area. A spectacular book with excellent photos, in a laser copy dust jacket in protective sleeve.
