Description
1851 Lynch Expedition to Jordan River Dead Sea Holy Land Illustrated Turkey
A rare early printing of William Lynchs report from his Dead Sea Expedition. Lynch was the commander of a survey expedition to the Dead Sea and Jordan Rivers in the mid-19th-centuries; the first successful voyage of its kind – traveling down the Jordan from the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea in 1848.
According to Blackmer,
“Lynch carried out the first successful navigation of the Dead Sea, travelling down the Jordan from the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea in 1848. Half the party travelled overland, the other half navigated the river. The boats had to be carried overland by camels from Acre to the Sea of Galilee. Lynch also visited Ephesus, Smyrna and Constantinople. The plates are after drawings by members of the expedition.”
This work features impressive, full-page engravings depicting scenery and landscapes, portraits, and folding maps of the expedition routes.
