Item Details
Description
Ca. 400-300 BC A black-glazed terracotta guttos (oil-lamp filler) on a low ring foot, a wheel-shaped body, a protruding handle, and a cylindrical spout with an everted rim. This type of vessel, was used to store precious oil to fill oil lamps and the name 'guttos' (λήκυθος in ancient Greek) implies that the oil was released drop by drop. This was made possible by the tiered, moulded rim and the elongated spout which prevented air from easily entering the vessel. Size: L:83mm / W:90mm ; 0.34g Provenance: Property of a London Gallery; acquired from US Art dealer; formerly in a German collection, 1983.
