Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco culture, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A remarkable, hand-built pottery jar in the form of a seated man adorned in red, white, gray, and black pigments. Presenting a giant head, the stylized figure leans forward with both arms bent at the elbows as he poses pensively, placing one hand on his leg and the other on his chin, as though in deep thought. His elongated visage consists of a large, triangular nose, incised eyes, and projecting ears; all characteristics indicative of a style known as "sheep faced," which was popular with the Jalisco cultures and is perhaps a symbolic stylization of a mystical person. The figure's body forms the bottom chamber of the vessel while a second bulbous chamber with a flared rim sits atop. A fascinating example from Jalisco culture! Size: 2.1" Diameter x 2.5" H (5.3 cm x 6.4 cm)
