Sixteen Egyptian white steatite scarabs
Middle Kingdom-Second Intermediate Period, circa 2050-1567 B.C.
All with incised detail on the underside, one with interlinked scrolls, 21mm; two with incised concentric circles, 16mm max; another with mirror image floral patterns, 20mm; another with wadj-signs, 15mm; two small examples, one with flowers separated by scroll work, the other with a central nefer flanked by lotus buds 11mm max; another with a central lotus plant, mirrored on either side by a crocodile standing on its tail with a uraeus behind, 18mm; one with a kneeling figure of Horus holding a lotus flower, flanked by cobras, 18mm; another with Nwb sign for gold with a djed pillar, flanked by ankh signs, 17mm; a small example with an animal, 14mm; another with a standing falcon-headed deity facing the throne name of Rameses II 'User-maat-ra', 17mm; another with a falcon-headed deity standing before an obelisk, 17mm; an example with a kneeling woman before a palm branch above a neb sign, 17mm; another example with a central clump of papyrus flanked by ankhs over a neb, the foreparts of a lion at the top, 19mm; another with a central ankh (life) flanked by nefer (beauty) signs, with a sa (protection) sign at each end, 16mm, and five other inscribed scarabs,

Provenance:
Acquired in Jerusalem between 1986-1988 by Fr.John Mothersole (1925-2021), who conducted pilgrimages to the Holy Land; by decent to family members. From 2005-2009, he was the priest-in-charge of St Mary Aldermary, Watling Street, rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666, by Sir Christopher Wren in the Gothic style. Further restorations were carried out in the following centuries, with Father John Mothersole overseeing much of the most recent restoration work during his tenure.
