Otto Piene 1928 Laasphe - 2014 Berlin Studied painting and art education at the Munich Art Academy from 1949 to 1953; Lecturer at the fashion school in Duesseldorf; from 1952 to 1957 studied philosophy in Cologne; 1964 Visiting Professor at the University of Pennsylvania; became professor of environmental art at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972, which appointed him director of the CAVS (Center for Advanced Visual Studies) in 1974; founded the influential artist group ZERO together with Heinz Mack in Duesseldorf in 1957 as a reaction to the abstract Informel; lived and worked in Groton/Massachusetts, Boston and Duesseldorf.
