DEWITT CLINTON LETTER OF INTRODUCTION FOR A YOUNG REPRESENTATIVE TO FUTURE PRESIDENT JAMES MONROE. Monroe spent much of 1803 in France and Spain negotiating the Louisiana Purchase before he was appointed ambassador to Great Britain. Unfortunately for Clinton, Monroe went to Spain at the end of November in order to attempt to negotiate the cession of Florida, stopping in Paris on December 2, 1804 to attend the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte at Notre Dame. Dewitt Clinton was the mayor of New York; his uncle George Clinton would become Jefferson's Vice-President in 1805 and Madison's in 1809. Dewitt Clinton would run for President of the United States against James Madison in 1812 and against Monroe himself in 1820.
