Description
Samuel Huntington letter signed ("Saml. Huntington President") as President of the Continental Congress. One page, 7" x 6.75", Philadelphia, [Pennsylvania]; March 30, 1781. Samuel Huntington, President of the U.S. Congress, sends a circular letter with enclosed ordinance relating to the capture and condemnation of prizes of British ships. Circular letter, presumably sent to all governors, by Huntington as president of Congress, concerning an ordinance passed by Congress regarding the capture and condemnation of British ships. The enclosure referenced in the letter is a broadside that was published in Philadelphia on March 27, 1781, three days prior to Huntington's letter. The letter reads, in full: "Your Excellency will receive herewith enclosed an Ordinance relative to the Capture & Condemnation of Prizes, and repealing all former Acts & Resolutions of Congress contrary to the true Intent and Meaning of this Ordnance. I have the Honor to be with the highest Respect, Your Excellency Most obedient & most humble servant". Signed, "Saml. Huntington President". Samuel Huntington (1731-1796) was a jurist and a statesman from Connecticut. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress for that state and signed the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. Huntington was elected president of the Continental Congress on September 28, 1779 and held that position until March 1, 1781. In 1784, he was appointed chief justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court and then served as governor of Connecticut in 1786 until his death in 1796. Also includes a hand-colored steel engraving of Huntington by J.C. Buttre, circa 1880-1881. Condition: 1" closed tear directly below signature.
