1792 Samuel Huntington Manuscript Military Order to Cavalry Document Signed as Governor of Connecticut
SAMUEL HUNTINGTON (1731-1796). Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Connecticut, served as President of the Continental Congress (September 28, 1779 to February 28, 1781), and after the Articles of Confederation were ratified, technically the First President of the United States (March 1-July 6, 1781).
September 5, 1792-Dated Federal Period, Manuscript Document Signed, “Sam’ Huntington” as Governor of Connecticut, 1 page, measuring 8” x 12.5”, at Norwich, (CT), Choice Very Fine. Boldly written on clean period laid paper, being a Military Order to the State’s Cavalry Regiments. This Order reads, in full;
“State of Connecticut -- By the Governor -- General Orders for the Cavalry:
The Commanding Officers of the several Regiments of Cavalry within this State are to cause a correct return to be made to the Adjutant General on or before the first Day of October next, of the Officers and Troops in the several Companies of Cavalry under their respective Commands, annexing to such Return a list of the names and rank of the Commission Officers.” Docket on reverse reads: “Gov Huntington Order Sept 6, 1792 Copy Inclosed to each Commdg Officer of Cavalry & Publish in Papers”. Notation in a contemporary separate hand in quill pen at bottom reads: “One of the signers of the Declaration of Independence”.
There is some minor expert archival reinforcement of the centerfold by a paper conservator, not affecting text. Expected folds with slight foxing at centerfold. Overall, bold and vivid with a massive 3.25” long rich brown ink signature “Sam’ Huntington” at its conclusion, and very attractive for display.
