1611 NATHANIEL BACON SIGNED DOCUMENT ORDER FOR BASTARD CHILD STIFFKEY ENGLAND ?
1611 NATHANIEL BACON SIGNED DOCUMENT ORDER FOR BASTARD CHILD STIFFKEY ENGLAND ?
Description
Manuscript 1611 Early English Document Regarding The Order for Mary the Bastard Child of Elizabeth Monyman (?), Signed by Nathaniel Bacon. Ink written text penned by an English secretary's hand is difficult to read, but the context is fairly clear. There was a charge of "Incontinency" which was a fornication charge. The result of the relationship was an illegitimate child named Mary. This document orders; that the parents be put in stocks, and that the parents pay money to provide for the care of the child.
Title on border: Order for Mary the bastard child of Eliza. Monyman. Dated at top: 1611. Text appears to read something like this: Whereas it appeareth unto us upon hearing and exammination taken of ??? and by our questioning that our George Ponti of Northroppol in the county of Norss is the father of a bastard child named Mary, born of the body of our Elizabeth Monyman of Northroppol...Justice of the Peace undernamed by virtue of the statue in this case provided, do order and appoint 1. That for some punishment of the offense, example before the said George and Elizabeth shall upon some holy day be openly put in the stocks at Northroppol...from on of the ? until three ...for Incontinency;. 2. That the said George shall...and that said Elizabeth shall pay the said ??? Shillings laid out by the said ? being one of our ? for the poor about the charge of keeping ot the said bastard child...
Document has two signatures on the bottom. One of them is "Na: Bacon". Online research leads me to believe that this document was signed by Nathaniel Bacon (1546-1622) of Stiffkey, Norfolk, England who was, among other things, a Justice of the Peace and made judgments on cases similar to this one. I found an image of an early document that was signed by him with a signature in the same style. Please see scans for content review.
Approximate size of paper is: 13-1/2" x 10-7/8". Condition: period ink manuscript writing on laid paper with soiling, staining, fold lines, edge wear.
