"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (first published on July 4, 1865) - originally published as "Alice's Adventures Under Ground". The story centers on the seven-year-old Alice, who falls asleep in a meadow, and dreams that she plunges down a rabbit hole. She finds herself first too large and then too small. She meets such strange characters as Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the King and Queen of Hearts, and experiences wondrous, often bizarre adventures, trying to reason in numerous discussions that do not follow the daylight logic. Finally, she loses her temper, bringing down this dream world and wakes up.

Gertrude Kay (1884-1939) was an artist, writer, and a prolific children books illustrator of the Golden Age of Illustration. She grew up in Alliance, Ohio, where her father was a prosperous hardware merchant. She studied illustration at the Philadelphia Museum School of Design and with Howard Pyle at the Drexel University in Philadelphia. Following her schooling, she returned to Alliance where she maintained a studio.

Kay won national awards for her watercolors. Her works were published in many national magazines, including McCall’s and Ladies’ Home Journal, and appeared throughout the United States and around the world. Her popularity increased and she became well-known for her colorful paintings including her illustration of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. While she illustrated many children’s books in her career, she was also a successful author of children's books as well.

Lewis Carroll (1832-1898), (pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), was an English writer and mathematician, logician, Anglican clergyman and photographer. He is best known for his enduring classics Alice in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1875). Though ostensibly children's books, they appeal to all ages.

Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914) was an English illustrator. He drew many topical cartoons and caricatures for Punch in the late 19th century, but is best remembered today for his illustrations for Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass
