"History of North Carolina" by Francis L. Hawks, with maps and illustrations, Second Volume covering the period of proprietary government, 1663-1729, published by E. J. Hale and Son, Fayetteville. First Edition with 1858 on the bottom of the title and copyright. [Howes H-325. Sabin 30965. Thornton 1507 and 1506. Weeks, p.26: "Hawks possessed the broadest scholarship and the highest literary attainments of any one who has written on the history of N.C...."].
Hard boards, blind embossed cloth with gold seal of Carolina on the front board, gold lettering on spine [spine ends and shelf wear]; 6" x 9.1/4"; name of former owner [Jms J. Wahlis] on the front endpaper, 591 pages, + 5 fold-out maps, 1 portrait, 1 plate, and a few in text illustrations. Very good condition.
Francis Lister Hawks (1798-1866) was an American writer, historian, educator and priest of the Episcopal Church. After practicing law with some distinction (and a brief stint as politician in North Carolina), Hawks became an Episcopal priest in 1827. Hawks was the first president of the University of Louisiana (now known as Tulane University). Hawks's major contributions now seem literary.
