Description
Wood Swatch From Washington's "Germantown White House." CAG Encapsulated.
Wood Swatch, 1" x .1". Germantown, Pennsylvania. A swatch of wood taken from the Germantown White House in Pennsylvania which George Washington resided in during his presidency. Encapsulated by CAG, and measuring 2.375'' x 3.375''.
Unlike today's presidents who reside in Washington, D.C, George Washington spent the entirety of his presidency in New York and Philadelphia. From 1790 to 1797, Washington lived in the President's House in Philadelphia, located on the corner of Market Street and 6th Street, just a block away from Independence Hall. However, on two separate occasions, Washington resided at the Germantown White House, also known as the Deshler-Morris House.
In 1793, Washington held four separate cabinet meetings at the house in order to escape the deadly Yellow Fever outbreak in Philadelphia, which included debates on the country's "Neutrality Proclamation" in relation to the war between France and Britain. The following year the house would become a welcome retreat for the President, Martha, and their step-grandchildren.
Today, the house has been protected by the National Park Service and restored to its 18th-century appearance.
