Description

Superb G. Washington Free Frank to R.I. Gov. Only 2 Months After Crossing The Delaware When Raising Troops PSA

Dramatic free frank, 3.5" x 7.25", dated March 1, 1777, from Morristown, NJ, and addressed to Nicholas Cooke, Governor of Rhode Island. Boldly signed by George Washington as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. Matted to a size of 22" x 16.5" Accompanied by an auction PSA/DNA LOA. The gorgeous free frank has incredible eye appeal and is boldly signed by the nation's first President, George Washington. With evidence of mounting dealer's notes in pencil on verso.

Washington wrote the letter once included in this free frank to the Rhode Island Governor "To call your attention towards expediting the recruiting and equipping of your battalion." The letter was written from Morristown, NJ. The town's location between Philadelphia and New York City held strategic advantage for the encampment of the Continental Army.

During the American Revolution, Patriot General George Washington crossed the Delaware River with 5,400 troops, hoping to surprise a Hessian force celebrating Christmas at their winter quarters in Trenton, New Jersey. The unconventional attack came after several months of substantial defeats for Washington’s army that had resulted in the loss of New York City and other strategic points in the region.

A less attractive example with significant toning and staining sold for $16,250 on June 4th in Heritage's Manuscript Auction.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
