Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A wonderful hand-built pottery figure of a seated female adorned with russet-hued glaze on a grey ground beneath a lustrous burnish. Wearing a skirt and a collar necklace, the ancient female presents a broad, flat body, large breasts with raised nipples, and stubbed arms projecting from her square shoulders. She displays a characteristically Jalisco head with an elongated brow or headdress that towers above coffee bean-shaped eyes, a sizeable, curved nose, and an incised smile bearing skillfully delineated teeth. Cupped ears flank her stylized visage, one of them exhibiting an annular drill hole which leads to the interior of the hollow figure. The top of her head is embellished by a pair of applied bands arranged in an "X" motif capped with a tab-like extension. Size: 5.9" W x 8.5" H (15 cm x 21.6 cm)
