Civil War Photos
Carte-de-Visite of The Original "Man Without A Country"
(CLEMENT L. VALLANDIGHAM), Leader of the Pro-Southern "Copperhead" Movement In the North During the Civil War, exiled by President Abraham Lincoln to the Confederacy, then the Confederates promptly shipped him off to Canada.
c. 1860 Civil War Era, Rare Carte-de-Visite reverse maker marked being from a negative by Matthew Brady and printed by E. Anthony of New York, no place or date, measuring 3.25" x 2.25" on its original card measuring 4" x 2-3/8", Very Fine. There are a few faint stains in the background portion, and a smattering of barely discernible specks, but these minor defects do not affect the exceptionally sharp image, or detract from the overall bright in contrast and vivid quality, corners trimmed for a prior holder. Vallandingham was the leader of the Northern Peace movement and unwanted by both sides. After being exiled by President Abraham Lincoln to the Confederacy, the Confederates promptly shipped him off to Canada. His ineptitude and general destructiveness dogged him to his death. While demonstrating in court how an alleged murder victim could have shot himself, he fatally wounded himself with the wrong gun!
