Literature
V. Galloway, The Oils and Murals of Sir Frank Brangwyn R.A, Leigh-on-Sea, 1962, p. 70, cat no. 812.
Frank Brangwyn made a number of trips to Africa in the early 1890s, and he is known to have visited South Africa in 1891, sailing with William Hunt. Galloway's 1962 catalogue lists some 51 South African works. While there is no specific record of the artist's trip to Zanzibar, the dating of the present lot suggests that he may have visited East Africa during this same 1891 expedition. This particular trip was cut short, apparently because of a shortage of funds. Brangywn later visited Morocco with fellow artist Dudley Hardy (see Sotheby's, London, 12 July 2007, lots 79 and 80).
The present work was shown at the 1952 retrospective at the Royal Academy, a large exhibition of some 470 works; this was the first time that the RA had honoured a living artist with retrospective exhibition.
We are grateful to Dr. Libby Horner for her assistance in cataloguing this lot. The work will be listed in her online catalogue of the Works of Frank Brangwyn, reference O - 4362.
