Description
and Child. Antique Russian painted icon of the Iverskaya(?) Mother of God. With antique Russian silver oklad or riza displaying openings which reveal portions of the painting beneath, and applied radiating halos. Riza/oklad with the city stamp representative of St Petersburg, "84", with an assay master's mark of, "??/1844" most surely signifying Dimitry Ilyich Tverskoy (St Petersburg, 1834-1851), and a maker's mark of, "???". By consignor provenance this icon was obtained by her Mother whom was a member of the USO during WWII. According to the written diary of her Mother it is thought that this icon was discovered in 1945 in Germany. From a Bedford, NY estate. Dimensions: icon measures approx. 9" h x 7.125" w.
Condition
Painting with losses, areas of rubbing from the applied riza/oklad, glue/tape residue to portions of edging, and painting has been adhered to additional wood panels beneath. Silver riza/oklad with wear consistent with age and use - exhibits minor losses, some bends, light surface scratches, and dings/dents. Solder repairs verso.
