Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A traveling icon comprised of 93% silver. Two doors open to reveal an icon of a saint delivering a blessing with his right hand and holding a scroll with his left hand. The image is covered by a silver oklad with Cyrillic writing on the saint's halo, a Cross adorning his omophorion, and cascading drapery folds of his robes that merge seamlessly with the rays emanating from his halo. There are hallmarks to his lower right. Nice remains of gilding adorn the borders of this central panel and engraved leaf motifs embellish the interiors of the left and right doors. The verso of the central door features a Latin cross with hallmarks below (including 84 for sterling silver). Icons like this example served as an easily transportable method for traveling priests to teach the stories that made up the foundation of Orthodox Christianity. Precious metal quality: 93% silver with gilding in areas as shown; Size: 2.75" W x 1.8" H (7 cm x 4.6 cm) when open; 1.375" W x 1.8" H (3.5 cm x 4.6 cm) closed; total weight: 32 grams.

Provenance: ex-Estate of Dr. W.M. Bogdanowicz, Naples, Florida, USA

#160758
Condition
Expected surface wear to cover, oklad, and doors with some losses to gilding, but nice traces remain. Painted image shows slight wear with scuffs commensurate with age. Silver and gilding have scuffs/minute nicks commensurate with age and have developed a warm age patina. Hallmarks to lower right proper of saint as well as below cross on verso are difficult to decipher, but one can make out "84" which stands for sterling silver.
