Pressure cooker.- Papin (Denis) La manière d'amolir les os, et de faire cuire toutes sortes de viandes en fort peu de temps, & à peu de frais, 2 parts in 1, 4 folding engraved plates of the cooker, blue ink writing erased from title (a very small area remains over 1 word (still legible)), first plate with repaired tear, without loss, occasional professional marginal repairs, occasional spotting / light staining, washed, later drab wrappers, strengthened, housed in a modern dark red morocco chemise and slip-case, gilt, [Bitting p.355 (note); Notaker 630 (note); Vicaire 652; cf. Cagle 369 & Livres en bouche 91 & Oberlé 89 (first edition in French)], 12mo, Amsterdam, Henry Desbordes, 1688.
⁂ Second edition in French, which is more complete than the first. On Papin's steam digester, which was a forerunner of the pressure cooker. He presented his idea to the Royal Society in 1679 after working with Robert Boyle over the previous three years. The work was first published in England in 1681 as A New Digester, or Engine for softning bones, with a continuation in 1687. His experiments with this apparatus led to his development of steam engines.
