Native American, Southeast or Midwest, Mississippian, ca. 900 to 1543 CE. An impressive stone axe head of triangular form, skillfully carved with a smooth, thick body that tapers to a curved, sharp edge. Boasting a lustrous burnish, the gorgeous implement presents mottled hues of light grey and brown that darken to a dark shade of taupe, all naturally decorated with beige striations. Size: 6.75" W x 5.75" H (17.1 cm x 14.6 cm)
Provenance: private Kansas City, Missouri, USA collection; ex-John Townsend collection, formed in the 1970s and earlier

Repaired from two pieces with restoration over break lines. Expected nicks/chips to sides and edge with a few deeper nicks on one side, commensurate with age and use. Otherwise, excellent.
