Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, southern Nayarit region, Chinesco, Lagunillas, Type C, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A superb, hand-built pottery figural rattle of a Chinesco Type C woman exhibiting painted and burnished surfaces. Decorated with red-brown pigment and accentuated with creamy white and gray-black hues, the figure stands atop narrow feet and ample thighs, tiny arms bent inward at the waist, and elongated head upon a thick neck. The protruding nose has a bulge underneath the nostrils indicating a septum piercing or ornament. The eyes are slightly impressed, and the ears are set low to the sides. From the top verso of the head is an opening vent hole, the pottery clapper ball visible inside to enable this sculptural figure to also function as a rattle! Size: 8.5" L x 4.75" W (21.6 cm x 12.1 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

Condition
Intact without repairs. Surface nicks and abrasions, and some fading to pigments, but overall excellent condition. Loose earthen and mineral deposits on interior.
